On the afternoon of August 13, 2026, the Disciplinary Committee of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) officially announced the handling decision for player Nguyen Van Hoang of Hanoi FC and related members in the controversial incident in round 18 of V.League 2026. The verdict was issued just 24 hours after the end of the match, showing the strictness of the tournament organizers in tightening discipline on domestic pitches. This decision is receiving special attention from the public and professionals due to its direct impact on the championship race this season.
According to the match report, the incident occurred in the 87th minute of the match between Hanoi FC and Binh Phuoc FC at Hang Day Stadium. The home team's number 8 midfielder made a tackle with his studs facing heavily into the ankle area of Tran Minh Vu, a midfielder of the away team. The main referee, after consulting VAR technology, immediately showed a straight red card to send Nguyen Van Hoang off the field. The match was interrupted for a few minutes to allow the away team's player to receive treatment. Tran Minh Vu had to leave the field on a stretcher and was taken to the hospital for a detailed examination where doctors determined he suffered a severe left ankle sprain, likely keeping him out for at least three weeks.
Notably, this is not the first time Nguyen Van Hoang has encountered disciplinary trouble this season. He received a total of 5 yellow cards in the first leg and had to miss one match. Before this latest penalty, many comments suggested that Hanoi FC players often handle the ball at dangerously aggressive levels. Reviewing footage of previous matches, the average foul rate of this player this season is at an abnormally high level. Specifically, after 18 rounds, he has committed a total of 34 fouls, averaging 1.9 times per match, much higher than the average of 1.2 times of other central midfielders in the same tournament.
The VFF Disciplinary Committee based its decision on Article 15 of the Regulations on Discipline of the Vietnam Football Federation issued in 2026. Accordingly, the penalty for violent conduct on the field was determined with very serious circumstances as the ball was not in the contested area and the player lacked restraint. The specific penalty for Nguyen Van Hoang is a 5-match consecutive suspension and a fine of 40 million VND. The entire duration of the disciplinary action is set to begin on August 14, 2026, before round 19 officially begins.
In addition, Hanoi FC also has to pay an additional fine of 20 million VND for the discipline violation of its coaching staff. In the moment their player received the red card, members on the technical bench of Hanoi FC reacted excessively, running onto the field to argue with the referee team. Recorded images showed the assistant coach cursing at the linesman, an unacceptable situation for a big club with championship ambitions. Explaining the heavy penalty, a representative of the Disciplinary Committee stated that strong measures are needed to deter, as the incident occurred in the context of VAR being installed at all V.League stadiums and truth-finding is no longer a matter of debate.
The absence of Nguyen Van Hoang for the next 5 matches is considered a heavy blow to Hanoi FC's championship ambitions. At this moment, the capital team is ranked second in the standings, just 2 points behind the leading team, Binh Duong FC. Hanoi FC's upcoming schedule will see them face tough opponents like SLNA, Binh Dinh FC, Ho Chi Minh City FC, and especially the central match against Binh Duong FC in round 21. The suspended player is the deepest midfield player, responsible for distributing the ball and screening the defense. His absence will force the team's head coach to restructure the midfield, but the current substitute players lack experience in the crucial decisive moments of the season.
Another point of special interest to fans is the consistency in VFF's penalties. Last season, defender Do Duy Manh of another club also made a similar dangerous tackle and only received a 2-match ban. However, the difference was that in that situation, the player attempted to pull his leg back at contact, and the touch was only on the toe area. This time, the entire body weight and twisting force of the kick was directed at the opponent's ankle, while the ball had already rolled away a split second before. The careful VAR review made the assessment clear: this was an act of dangerous play intended to injure rather than a normal ball challenge.
From the perspective of commercial and tournament management, this penalty of the VFF is also highly rated by sports business analysts in many aspects. V.League is currently implementing a new generation of television rights contracts with national and regional broadcasters, which means that the image of a violent and poorly controlled tournament would seriously affect revenue from advertising and sponsorship. When a match is disrupted by a brutal tackle, audiences tend to turn off the TV and sponsors will reconsider when placing their logos in an unsafe arena. Therefore, quickly issuing a strong penalty not only demonstrates the strictness of sports law but also a move to protect the national brand for the host country of upcoming major sporting events.
Therefore, many administrators are viewing this event as a positive signal for the professionalization process of Vietnamese football. Transparent disciplinary processing will help players become more aware of their behavior on the field, and also help clubs build a cleaner and more scientific playing identity instead of relying on excessive aggression. Young football academies like PVF and Nutifood Academy will also use this situation to teach etiquette culture on the field, where the score is not the only thing that needs to be respected.
The reaction from Hanoi FC after receiving the decision also showed a contrast between the press conference room and statements in the media. While the head coach declared he would respect the VFF Disciplinary Committee's decision and would not appeal to maintain the club's image, some high-ranking club officials quietly stated that they are reviewing slow-motion footage to determine if there are any mitigating circumstances. However, sports lawyers familiar with the regulations all affirmed that with the referee using VAR and determining a serious foul, a successful appeal is almost impossible unless someone can prove the referee misapplied the law.
Ultimately, the verdict for Nguyen Van Hoang in round 18 of V.League 2026 is not simply a penalty for an individual. It becomes a strong wake-up call for all professional players in Vietnam. In a season where fans are expecting a generation of talented players who can compete internationally, maintaining a fair and healthy competitive environment is the strongest foundation for long-term development. The severity of the penalty may pass, but the lesson about discipline, respect for opponents, and respect for the fans will be remembered for many years every time there is a dispute on the field.
